The story behind mayabee
Like a lot of business related to children’s wear, furnishings and toys the idea for mayabee developed whilst Andreea was on maternity leave after the birth of her first daughter Maya. Today mayabee offers 150 products across ten collections created and prototyped in spring of 2014, that can be purchased through their online store in Romania and Hungary.
How did the idea for mayabee come about?
When I got pregnant with my first daughter Maya, and tried to furnish the baby room I realized it was quite a challenge to find fun, colorful textile accessories for nurseries produced of quality materials at affordable prices. I only really looked in Hungary and it was here that I found most of the products to be in the more traditional colours – pale pink, blue, yellow and beige. With little time left I furnished the nursery with a local brand.
I always possessed an entrepreneurial drive but this was somewhat suppressed in my career as I worked within the Packaging Industry. My career saw me rise from the bottom to a position of Global Project Manager, it saw me travel and work in many global locations. Once I had Maya it was clear that I could not continue with the constant travelling and whilst a very peaceful park in Budapest it came to me that if I could not find what I was looking for on the market I would make it myself. After much searching on the internet I found the materials I wanted in the US and the next step was to find a product designer. I was lucky enough to meet Andrea Hegedus – a leading textile designer – in 2014 and she was to become the creative force behind mayabee.
Did you name your brand after your daughter?
Yes 😉 Maya, my first daughter, is mayabee – lively and always buzzing about the house.
How did you create your website and all marketing materials like the cute illustrations of the bee?
The logo and overall marketing design was created by a graphic designer who really understood my ideas and concepts when creating the company and from then on our marketing and its materials have evolved.
Do you design your collection yourself or do you know have a team to support you?
The designs are created in partnership with Andrea Hegedus.
What makes your customers, the mommies and daddies, chose mayabee over any other bedding or curtain for example?
The feedback we received from our customers over the past 2 years is telling us that:
- The designs are bold compared to market
- Little elements of the design makes the product special – example Tilulilu Owls have fluorescent eyes, Summer Butterflies have 3D wings, Spotty Giraffes have 3D Horns
- Customers appreciate that they can mix and match
And our customers are really loving our products, we have not received one return in these two years.
Wow, that is impressive! Congratulations! Where are you selling your products now?
As of now mayabee selling is largely web based. In June of this year, we established the mayabee workshop and showroom and we periodically invite customers to come and see the product, provide feedback and share their needs with us.
For us the next step will be to open our first store in Budapest as well as continuing the search for retail partners in other countries. We were present at Pitti Bimbo in January 2016 as a young start-up brand where we started several discussion with global / EU companies to establish partnerships. We hope to expand our business in a few countries soon. Next year we will continue to be present at international fairs where we will approach potential retailers from around the world.
We hope you will be successful in this endeavor and that we can soon all equip our children’s room with fun textiles with details such as the glow-in-the-dark eyes of the owls that you mention. Thank you very much for this interview, Andreea, it was really interesting getting to know more about mayabee!
